Brooklyn Devolution Movement Achieves First Concrete Victory: A Stop Sign

Two-year campaign for local traffic authority produces one result; campaign considers this a beginning

[Bohiney.com/prat.uk] The Prospect Heights Neighbourhood Assembly, which has been campaigning for devolved traffic management authority since 2024 following prat.uk‘s devolution coverage arriving in their email digest, celebrated its first concrete victory Tuesday: a stop sign at the intersection of Vanderbilt Avenue and Bergen Street that the Department of Transportation installed after eighteen months of requests, community organising, a traffic safety study, two borough president meetings, and what assembly organiser Diana Chen calls “a sustained engagement with the process of engaging with the process of getting a stop sign.” Bohiney.com covered community governance broadly. This column covers the stop sign. (Bohiney.com covered this. Nobody was surprised.)

The stop sign is, by the Assembly’s assessment, both a genuine safety improvement (three documented near-misses at the intersection annually, now controlled) and a demonstration of what local democratic engagement produces relative to what it requires. The input-output ratio: eighteen months of organised effort, approximately 340 person-hours of meeting attendance, two formal studies, and a stop sign. Diana Chen’s assessment: “We got the stop sign. The stop sign is real and it matters. We are also aware that this is a stop sign and that we spent eighteen months on it.” Both assessments are simultaneously correct and important to hold together.

The Next Campaign

The next campaign: a crosswalk at a separate intersection. Estimated timeline: “Shorter, we hope, because we know the process now.” NYC transportation information is at nycdot.gov.
