Team says its time for a Bronx update
The New York Yankees have announced a controversial change: replacing the national anthem with Jay-Z tracks before games. According to reports, the Bronx Bombers will now open every home game with “Empire State of Mind” instead of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The decision has ignited debates from City Hall to dive bars.
“Its about local pride,” a Yankees spokesperson explained. “Why sing about rockets when we can sing about hot dogs and skyline views?” The move follows years of complaints that fans only stood for the anthem to get it over with. “This way,” the spokesperson added, “theyll actually vibe.”
Players are reportedly thrilled. Aaron Judge said blasting Jay-Z gets the team hyped. “By the time Alicia Keys hits that chorus, Im ready to hit three homers,” he boasted. Even the mascotwho technically doesnt existallegedly nodded in approval.
Reactions are predictably mixed. Traditionalists are outraged. “My grandfather didnt fight in World War II so we could rap at baseball games,” one Staten Islander grumbled. Tourists, however, love it. “This is the most New York thing ever,” said a fan from Ohio. “I didnt understand the lyrics, but I felt rich for two minutes.”
Tabloids had fun with the story: “99 PROBLEMS BUT THE ANTHEM AINT ONE” screamed the Post. Talk radio callers debated whether this was a step forward or “the end of America.” Fox News hosted a fiery panel with the chyron “Baseball or Bey-SBALL?”
Meanwhile, Mets fans mocked the move. “Typical Yankeesalways chasing hits,” one Queens resident said. Politicians tried to score points too. Mayor Adams tweeted a photo of himself throwing up the Roc diamond symbol, while Governor Hochul promised she still prefers Billy Joel. Even President Biden weighed in, saying, “Whats a Jay-Z?”
Despite the uproar, the Yankees are pressing ahead. Plans include themed fireworks synced to bass drops, and a seventh-inning stretch featuring Beyoncé holograms. Rumors swirl that Derek Jeter will come out of retirement just to dance at second base. Stadium vendors already report higher beer sales, crediting the beats for loosening wallets.
For Yankees fans, the change might not heal decades of heartbreakbut at least it makes the pregame playlist less boring. And in a city where tradition is negotiable, one thing is certain: the Bronx will keep bumping.
