Times Square Declares Itself a Nation

Offers passports with free Elmo hug

Move over, United Nations—the costumed characters of Times Square have declared independence. According to reports, the neon-lit hub is now the “People’s Republic of Times Square,” complete with its own anthem (played on plastic buckets), currency (singles and fives), and border patrol (guys dressed as Spider-Man).

The new nation issued passports on opening day, redeemable for one free hug from Elmo or a selfie with a knockoff Iron Man. “We’ve been ignored by City Hall for too long,” proclaimed President Minnie Mouse, wearing a sash that read “Founding Mother.” She announced that the nation’s motto is: “In Characters We Trust.”

Critics argue the move is a tourist trap gone rogue. “What’s next, Staten Island declaring independence as the Kingdom of Bagel?” one Brooklynite scoffed. But others see potential. “Honestly, if Times Square leaves New York, traffic might actually improve,” said a cab driver, weeping with joy.

The constitution of the new republic guarantees every citizen the right to wear a sweaty mascot suit, solicit tips without shame, and aggressively promote off-Broadway magic shows. National cuisine includes $8 pretzels, bootleg CDs, and “authentic” I ?? NY T-shirts made in bulk overseas.

Foreign relations are rocky. Broadway has refused diplomatic recognition, calling the fledgling nation “an embarrassment.” Meanwhile, the M&M’s store applied for embassy status, citing decades of candy diplomacy. Negotiations with Olive Garden for trade deals reportedly collapsed after endless breadsticks were deemed “a security threat.”

Tourists are lining up for citizenship, delighted by the novelty. “Where else can you get mugged by Cookie Monster and still call it cultural exchange?” asked one delighted Texan. Social media exploded with hashtags #TimesSquareNation and #MuppetDiplomacy. The Post headline: “UNITED CHARACTERS OF AMERICA.” The Daily News countered with: “WE THE PEEP-HOLE.”

New York officials, for once, are relieved. “If they want to govern themselves, good luck,” said one councilmember. “Let’s see them handle sanitation.” Meanwhile, rumors swirl that Times Square may apply for UN membership, though experts warn it would require them to sit through meetings instead of shouting “HELLO PICTURE?” at pedestrians.

Whether this nation thrives or collapses remains to be seen. But for now, tourists, mascots, and hustlers alike are united in chaos—a true reflection of New York values.
