Tourists press to impress
Times Square has always been a blinding cathedral of consumerism, but according to reports, the billboards are now interactive. Yes, you can poke, swipe, and even Tinder-left a Coca-Cola ad while being elbowed by five Elmos and three half-naked cowboys.
Tourists delight in tapping Pepsi logos that squirt digital soda, while locals groan that now the sidewalks are clogged with people trying to log into their billboards WiFi. “I just wanted to cross 42nd Street without being attacked by an interactive M&M,” muttered one Midtown commuter clutching a MetroCard.
TikTok is ablaze with #TouchTheBillboard clips, showing influencers pretending to karate-chop Times Square screens. One unlucky dancer accidentally purchased 12 tickets to Shrek: The Musical in Cleveland by slapping the wrong corner of a digital Dunkin ad. The crowd cheered, the ad updated to say “Congrats on your impulsive buy!”
Tabloids had fun. “SCREENS GONE WILD” screamed the Post. The Daily News offered: “PRESS HERE FOR PANIC.”
Mayor Adams declared this “a new way to monetize curiosity.” Governor Hochul muttered, “We just gave advertisers god mode.” Broadway producers, meanwhile, wondered how to get audiences to swipe right on Cats.
