Queens Subway Station Declares Independence

Breakaway transit nation

According to reports, a Queens subway station has officially seceded from the MTA, declaring itself “The Independent Republic of Roosevelt Avenue–Jackson Heights.” Leaders cited years of neglect, signal problems, and rats that already act like border guards. “We’re tired of being just another stop,” proclaimed the self-appointed transit president, holding a MetroCard like a declaration scroll.

The new nation has its own constitution (written on a Dunkin’ Donuts napkin), currency (expired MetroCards), and anthem (a mariachi remix of “Take the A Train”). Security is handled by pigeons trained to peck anyone who asks for directions to Manhattan. Tourists are required to apply for visas at a pop-up booth next to the churro stand.

Locals are split. Some celebrate. “Finally, sovereignty!” said one commuter. Others are annoyed. “Now I need a passport just to get to Flushing,” groaned another. The MTA has threatened sanctions, including removing the one escalator that sort of works.

TikTok’s #SubwayNation is booming: videos show a rat swearing into office as Minister of Transportation, influencers posing with the national flag (a MetroCard taped to a pole), and a viral clip of someone being deported to Brooklyn mid-commute. Street vendors are already selling passports with holographic pizza slices.

Tabloids revolted. The Post screamed: “STATION STATE.” The Daily News countered: “TRAINS-FORMATION.”

Mayor Adams shrugged: “If they govern better than the MTA, I’ll move there.” Governor Hochul muttered, “If Penn Station secedes, I’m banning tunnels.”
