NYU Students Start Rent Strike

Campus vs. landlords

According to reports, NYU students have started a rent strike after discovering they were paying $5,000 a month to share a closet-sized dorm with three roommates and a family of cockroaches. The protest includes drum circles, neon posters, and an ironic GoFundMe to cover protest snacks.

Organizers claim the rent strike is not just about high costs but also the “psychological burden” of explaining to parents why their address is technically a janitor’s closet.

TikTok’s #DormStrike trend shows students chaining themselves to doors of overpriced coffee shops. One viral video featured a philosophy major refusing to pay rent because “existence is already rent.”

Tabloids rallied. “KIDS WON’T PAY” screamed the Post. The Daily News countered: “TUITION TANTRUM.”

Mayor Adams praised it as “youth engagement.” Governor Hochul muttered, “I paid $300 a month back in college and still complained.”
