NYC Installs Turnstiles in Bathrooms

Swipe before you flush

New Yorkers now have to swipe twice as hard. According to reports, the city has installed MTA-style turnstiles in public bathrooms, requiring a MetroCard or OMNY tap before flushing. The Department of Sanitation insists the policy will “streamline human traffic flow” and “cut down on fare-beating urination.”

Locals are livid. “I already pay $3.25 to ride the train, and now I have to pay to pee?” shouted one Queens commuter clutching a soggy MetroCard. Tourists, however, are confused but compliant—one family from Iowa tapped in and declared the experience “authentic New York.”

The bathrooms feature countdown clocks, service-change announcements, and occasional rats handing out tissues. Riders can request bathroom transfers, but only if they exit and re-enter through another turnstile in under two hours.

Tabloids flushed with headlines. “NUMBER TWO SURCHARGE” screamed the Post. The Daily News countered: “TOILET TOLLS.” TikTokers launched #SwipeToFlush, filming themselves dramatically missing their tap while hopping turnstiles into stalls.

Mayor Adams defended the move, calling it “innovative infrastructure.” Governor Hochul added, “If you can make it here, you can make it to the bathroom—eventually.”

For now, public restrooms are officially part of the MTA system. And yes, they’re delayed too.
