Japan Elects First Female Prime Minister

Glass Ceiling Shatters in Tokyo; Elderly Male Politicians Confused by Sound

In a historic moment that only took 77 years after women gained suffrage in Japan, the country has elected its first female Prime Minister, Yuki Tanaka, who will now lead a government that is somehow still 89% male.

“This is a tremendous victory for women everywhere,” Tanaka announced to thunderous applause, before immediately being asked by a reporter if she plans to balance her new role with her responsibilities at home. She responded by staring directly into the camera for 15 uncomfortable seconds, a clip that has already gone viral.

The 52-year-old former Finance Minister won her party’s leadership election after her main opponent, a 73-year-old man who once said women’s “natural roles” were “best suited to supporting positions,” spectacularly imploded his own campaign by doubling down on those comments during a live television debate.

International leaders rushed to congratulate Japan on this milestone, with several noting it only took until 2025. “Better late than never!” tweeted one Western leader from a country that elected its first female head of government in 1960, carefully not mentioning their own 60-year gap.

Political analysts predict Tanaka will face immense pressure to be perfect while simultaneously being blamed for everything that goes wrong, a phenomenon they’re calling “literally what happens to every woman in leadership but we’re going to act surprised anyway.”

When asked about her priorities, Prime Minister Tanaka outlined an ambitious agenda focused on economic reform, climate policy, and answering the same questions about work-life balance that male prime ministers have never once been asked.
