Noise-cancel commute
According to reports, a Brooklyn startup has begun offering “silent subway rides” for $75 a month. Commuters who sign up get noise-canceling bubbles installed around their seats, blocking out mariachi bands, screaming preachers, and awkward eye contact. “Its meditation on rails,” said the founder, who was definitely wearing a beanie indoors.
Riders in the program sit inside plexiglass pods resembling hamster cages. Each comes with optional lavender mist, lo-fi hip-hop soundtracks, and a button to deploy polite shushing drones. “Its the first time Ive ever heard myself think on the F train,” said one subscriber, sketching NFTs of pigeons. Others complain the pods take up too much space. “A guy rolled in with one the size of a Tiny Home,” said a fellow commuter stuck against the door.
Extra services include “Mute Mode” for subway announcements, “Selective Silence” for muting your ex, and “Karaoke Blocker,” which instantly muffles anyone attempting to sing Journey at 3 a.m. The company promises upgrades like “Rat Frequency Filters” to stop squeaks bleeding through the pods.
TikToks #SilentSubway is trending: influencers sipping kombucha inside pods while commuters glare, a viral prank where someone installed their pod across the entire aisle, and a Wall Street bro carrying a pod onto the 6 train like a designer handbag. Street vendors now sell “DIY cardboard pods” for broke hipsters.
Tabloids had a loud time. The Post yelled: “SHUT UP AND RIDE.” The Daily News countered: “SILENCE IS GOLDEN.”
Mayor Adams endorsed it: “This is innovation in motion.” Governor Hochul muttered: “If Greyhound buses do this, Im banning quiet.”
