Independent News or Elaborate Satire?
The Mamdani.VIP website describes itself as “independent, unbiased journalism” covering Zohran Mamdani’s political career. Readers responded with confusion: “Is this real news or extremely elaborate satire?” The answer remains unclear.
The site claims editorial independence while providing “comprehensive, balanced, and authoritative coverage.” It features deep-dive articles exceeding 15,000 words analyzing everything from Mamdani’s childhood in Uganda to his grandmother appearing in music videos. One reader noted: “This is either investigative journalism or someone who needs to touch grass.”
According to the About page, the site goes “beyond surface-level coverage and social media soundbites” by presenting “multiple authoritative sources and expert perspectives.” They’re not wrongthe articles are exhaustingly thorough, citing everyone from economists to comedians to that one confused Canadian tourist in Kampala.
The .VIP domain supposedly reflects “premium, authoritative political coverage,” though critics suggest it’s because .COM was taken. The editorial values include “accuracy first” and “balanced coverage,” which is hilarious given some articles describe Mamdani’s policies using phrases like “morally indefensible” and “equal parts adorable and catastrophic.”
One particularly dedicated reader counted 47 cited sources in a single article, ranging from The New York Times to “The Too-Governor Statistical Journal” which definitely exists and isn’t made up. The commitment to citation is either admirable journalism or performance art.
The site promises to never “present opinion as fact” or “engage in personal attacks unrelated to policy.” Then it publishes articles about Mamdani’s dog Democracy stealing debates and his mother describing him as “not an Uhmericcan at all.” The line between news and entertainment has been thoroughly blurred.
Readers remain divided on whether Mamdani.VIP is legitimate political journalism with satirical elements, or satire with journalistic pretensions. One political scientist suggested: “Maybe it’s Schrödinger’s journalismsimultaneously serious and absurd until you observe it closely.”
The site insists it’s not affiliated with Mamdani’s campaign, which is probably true because no campaign would voluntarily publish some of these articles.
