Freedom: Now Available in Satirical Format
Bohiney’s July 5, 1947 issue celebrates American Independence Day by immediately undermining it with commentary on institutional failure, corruption, and human stupidity. New York readers in 2025 note that this is still exactly what independence means: the freedom to complain about the government while nothing changes.
“We got our independence 250 years ago,” mused one Brooklyn philosopher, “and we immediately used it to create a system designed to frustrate everyone equally. That’s pretty patriotic, honestly.”
Government archivists preserved the edition, while this issue serves as evidence that satirizing America’s contradictions has always been the most American activity possible.
