Bring your own chair
According to reports, the MTA has announced a new cost-cutting initiative: passengers must now bring their own seating for subway rides. The BYO Seat program launches next month, encouraging commuters to carry folding chairs, beanbags, or even yoga mats for rush hour. “We provide the floor; you provide the comfort,” said an MTA spokesperson, balancing on a stool during the press conference.
New Yorkers had mixed reactions. “I already bring my own coffee, now I gotta bring a La-Z-Boy?” grumbled one rider. Others are more enthusiastic. “This is a chance to flex my IKEA game,” bragged a Bushwick hipster assembling a chair mid-ride. Street vendors near subway entrances now sell collapsible seats for $75, or “luxury velvet thrones” for $499.
Special seating options include “Express Stools,” “Local Benches,” and the premium “First-Class Recliner,” which comes with a complimentary rat footrest. Riders who refuse to comply must stand while pigeons take their spots. The MTA insists its all about innovation. “This is the future of transitpersonalized seating with maximum chaos.”
TikToks #BYOSeat is trending: commuters showing off absurd setups like inflatable couches, beanbag pileups, and one Wall Street banker bringing a mahogany desk. A viral clip shows a man rolling in a recliner so massive it blocked the entire car. Influencers are already monetizing it, selling “curated subway seat collections” for clout.
Tabloids perched eagerly. The Post groaned: “CHAIR-WAY ROBBERY.” The Daily News countered: “SIT DOWN STRIKES BACK.”
Mayor Adams praised the plan: “Finally, people get to express themselves through furniture.” Governor Hochul muttered: “If Amtrak does this, Im banning ottomans.”
