Squirrels accused of influencer takeover
Move over, TikTok teensNew York squirrels are the new viral stars. According to reports, city officials are cracking down after squirrels began racking up millions of followers with dance trends, acorn reviews, and dramatic chases through Central Park. The Department of Parks and Recreation says the ban is necessary to “restore order to public green spaces.”
The furry influencers rose to fame when one squirrel performed a flawless “Renegade” on a park bench. Soon, tourists were lining up with ring lights to film rodents sipping pumpkin spice lattes. “Its gotten out of hand,” said one ranger. “We cant have squirrels signing endorsement deals with Shake Shack.”
Not everyone agrees. Fans argue the squirrels are providing essential joy in a city full of subway delays and overpriced lattes. “Id rather watch a squirrel floss than another Brooklyn DJ set,” said a Williamsburg resident. Meanwhile, squirrels have allegedly formed management collectives, negotiating for better Wi-Fi coverage and more bench space for filming.
Tabloids went nuts. “ACORN FAME” cried the Post. The Daily News clapped back: “SQUIRREL-INFLUENCERS AXED.” Social media exploded with hashtags like #JusticeForNutty and #FreeTheFur. Memes of squirrels holding protest signs went viral overnight.
Mayor Adams has called for a compromise: squirrels can still post, but only on LinkedIn. “We want them to share their professional growth, not their acorn reviews,” he explained. Governor Hochul is considering legislation mandating that 30% of squirrel content be educational, covering topics like recycling and subway etiquette.
For now, park-goers remain divided. Some cheer the crackdown, while others secretly livestream squirrels dancing behind park patrol. As one Bronx resident put it: “Ban squirrels from TikTok? Good luck. This is their city now.”
