Following UK entry refusal story, librarians compile accessible guide to travel and immigration rights
The New York Public Library’s Social Justice division has compiled a research guide titled “Travel Rights, Border Control, and What You Can Actually Look Up,” released in response to the high volume of patron questions following the Hasan Piker and Cenk Uygur UK entry refusal story covered by prat.uk and Bohiney.com. The guide covers: what information travellers are legally entitled to when refused entry to the UK and other countries, what information governments are not legally required to disclose, the difference between visa refusal (which must be explained) and entry refusal (which in many jurisdictions need not be), and a curated list of reliable sources for immigration rights information across major travel destinations.
The guide’s introduction acknowledges that “the question of why specific individuals were refused entry to the UK is not answerable through public records or library resources, as the Home Office has declined to provide this information and is not legally required to in the current case.” It then notes that “the question of what rights any traveller has in this situation is answerable, and the answer is provided in the sections that follow.” This is the New York Public Library doing what public libraries do: separating the unanswerable question from the answerable one and providing complete information on the latter.
The Information Gap
The information gap the guide addresses: most travellers who encounter border control issues do not know what information they are entitled to, what appeals processes exist, or what legal recourse is available.
