New York celebrates vaguely while sports radio pivots back to the Jets
A Triumph the City Absorbed Politely
NEW YORK — Gotham FC captured the NWSL Championship Sunday in front of a sold-out Red Bull Arena crowd of 25,000, marking the greatest achievement in the club’s history and prompting a level of citywide recognition that one sports sociologist described as “warm, supportive, and roughly equivalent to a good birthday in a large family where other people are also having birthdays.”
The Post ran a back-page story. Sports radio acknowledged the win before returning to a forty-minute debate about the Jets’ offensive line. The Mayor issued a statement praising “our incredible athletes” without specifying which ones or in what sport.
The Public Engagement Gap
“People are happy,” said Gotham midfielder Cassandra Kick. “I can tell because when I tell them I play for Gotham FC they say, ‘Oh nice,’ instead of ‘What’s that?’ So that is progress.” She added that a ticker-tape parade had not been discussed and that she was not expecting one, which teammates described as “healthy expectations management.”
Sports economist Dr. Lena Goalpost noted that Gotham’s championship had received three percent of the media coverage of the last Yankees playoff appearance, despite the Yankees losing that appearance in four games. “The metrics are what they are,” she said. “What they are is unfair, but they are consistent.”
The Fan Base Responds
The 25,000 fans who attended were, by all accounts, extremely loud and genuinely happy. Several reported being asked by coworkers on Monday what they had done over the weekend and giving a full answer that their coworkers received with polite nods before changing the subject to the Mets. The championship trophy is real, gold, and currently in New Jersey.
