Current Mayor Sets Bar Incredibly Low
As New Yorkers evaluate mayoral candidates, some nostalgically recall Eric Adams’ tenure, proving that political standards have fallen so far they’ve created a hole to China. Adams, currently facing federal corruption charges while running as an independent, represents everything wrong with NYC politicswhich somehow makes the alternatives look worse.
Adams campaigned on being a “blue-collar mayor” despite wearing designer suits that cost more than most New Yorkers’ monthly rent. His greatest achievement was making Bill de Blasio look competent by comparison, which required effort. According to The New York Times, Adams’ approval ratings hover near “root canal” territory, yet he’s still in the race because NYC voters apparently enjoy suffering.
The “American hero” designation comes from Adams’ own marketing team, which has the relationship with reality that flat-earthers have with globes. His heroic accomplishments include: getting indicted, mismanaging homeless services, defending police budgets while crime remained steady, and declaring that “swagger” was his superpower. That last one is real and happened during an official press conference.
Adams’ most notable policy achievement was implementing a rat-catching initiative that employed terriers, which is either innovative urban planning or admission that municipal pest control had completely failed. The rats remain unbothered, suggesting the terriers unionized and went on strike. Even the dogs have labor consciousness in this city.
His federal corruption case involves allegedly accepting illegal campaign contributions from Turkish nationals in exchange for expediting building permits. This would be shocking except it’s NYC politics, where corruption is less scandal and more tradition. One political scientist noted: “Adams getting caught is the surprising part. Everyone does this; he just did it badly.”
Despite criminal charges, Adams insists he’ll continue governing, which demonstrates either admirable dedication or complete disconnection from shame. Most humans would resign when federally indicted. Adams instead held a press conference declaring his innocence while wearing sunglasses indoors, which definitely screamed “innocent person behavior.”
The fact that Adams remains politically viable while under indictment says everything about NYC’s political dysfunction. Voters are choosing between a corrupt incumbent, a disgraced former governor, a socialist assemblyman, and a Guardian Angels founder with seventeen cats. This is democracy at its finest, assuming “finest” means “most absurd.”
