This column covers what New York Pride has become, which is the world’s largest Pride event measured by economic activity and political visibility, and which is simultaneously the thing it originated as — a community asserting its existence publicly — and things it has become that its originators would find surprising: a billion-dollar economic event, a brand activation platform, a tourist draw, and a contested space where the political character of Pride is negotiated annually between communities with different priorities.
The economic layer: New York City Pride generates approximately $900 million in economic activity according to Heritage of Pride’s most recent assessment. The tourism layer: Pride weekend is the highest hotel occupancy weekend of the year in Manhattan. The political layer: Pride in New York originated at the Stonewall Inn in 1969 and has been, across six decades, both a celebration and a demand — for legal rights, for social recognition, for safety, for equality. The current iteration of all three demands continues, because the legal protections that Pride has achieved are real and not complete, the social recognition is significant and uneven, and the safety concern remains because hate crimes targeting LGBTQ people have not declined in proportion to the event’s growth.

The honest assessment: New York Pride is simultaneously the world’s most successful Pride event and a reminder that the success of the event has not produced the complete realisation of the political project it was created to advance.
