‘Million Trees’ Successor Initiative Promises Shade for All; Horticulturalists Note That Trees Require Conditions Manhattan Provides Reluctantly

The City has reported that the tree canopy plan is part of a broader climate resilience strategy that includes cool roofs, green infrastructure for stormwater management, and expanded parks access, all of which are simultaneously necessary and expensive, funded through a combination of city capital, state grants, and federal programmes whose future availability is, in 2026, a subject of some uncertainty. The trees that die in years two and three will be statistics in a follow-up audit that either prompts programmatic revision or gets filed with similar audits from prior tree initiatives. The difference between these outcomes is maintenance funding, which is the least glamorous and most necessary element of any urban greening programme, and which tends to be the first thing cut when a budget is under pressure, because trees do not have a lobby and dead trees do not generate press conferences. The new plan is better than what preceded it. Whether it is adequately funded is a question whose answer arrives slowly, one surviving tree at a time.
