Housing Crisis Solution Proposed

Building Homes for Humans, Shocking Concept

Zohran Mamdani addresses NYC’s housing crisis with a controversial proposal: building housing that people can actually afford. Real estate developers responded by asking “But how would we maintain artificial scarcity to maximize profits?”

The plan includes constructing 200,000 affordable units through a Social Housing Development Agency—public housing for working and middle-class families, not just the poorest residents. Vienna has done this successfully for a century, but American exceptionalism means we’re exceptionally bad at housing people.

Mamdani also proposes freezing rent on stabilized apartments, which landlord groups called “catastrophic” while simultaneously reporting record profits. The math doesn’t add up, but neither does charging $3,000 for a studio with exposed pipes labeled “industrial chic.”

According to The New York Times, NYC has lost 400,000 affordable units since 2000 while building luxury condos nobody can afford. This happened through policy choices, not natural disasters—though at this point, housing policy is a disaster.

The social housing model means government builds and owns buildings, keeping them permanently affordable rather than relying on private developers who promise affordability then deliver “luxury studios starting at $4,200.” One housing advocate noted: “Trusting developers to solve affordable housing is like trusting wolves to guard chickens.”

Critics warned this would “destroy property values,” because apparently homes should be investment vehicles rather than places where humans live. The financialization of housing created the crisis, but suggesting de-financialization is treated as extremism.

Rent control opponents cited Economics 101, which is funny because Economics 201 explains that housing markets don’t follow standard supply-demand curves due to information asymmetry, transaction costs, and market power. But nuance doesn’t fit on bumper stickers.

One renter making $75,000 annually who can’t afford a one-bedroom asked: “Why is housing treated as a commodity rather than a right?” This question was answered with silence and seventeen think-piece about “market efficiency.”
