Pay per scream
According to reports, Broadway producers have introduced Uber-style surge pricing during musicals whenever a performer hits a high note. Patrons are shocked to find an extra $25 charge on their Playbill every time the soprano belts above a C. “Its like a toll booth for emotions,” complained one theatergoer. “I cried during Wicked and got invoiced for $200.”
The plan was designed to offset rising production costs. “Hitting a high note isnt free,” explained one producer. “Its like emotional Broadway cryptosupply and demand, baby.” Ushers now carry credit card scanners to swipe audience members mid-song. One fan fainted when charged $60 for Idina Menzels E-flat in a revival performance.
Critics argue its gouging. “I already paid $400 for a ticket and $30 for a Diet Coke. Now Im expected to mortgage my apartment because someone sang their lungs out?” But tourists are still lining up. “Its cheaper than therapy,” shrugged one visitor, wiping tears and holding a declined receipt.
TikToks #BroadwaySurge trend shows influencers livestreaming their credit card statements after seeing Phantom. A viral clip showed a man being escorted out after Venmo failed mid-chorus.
Tabloids sang about it. “NOTE FEES” screamed the Post. The Daily News countered: “CHARGE OF THE SOPRANO.”
Mayor Adams praised it as “artistic monetization.” Governor Hochul muttered, “If my Hamilton ticket surges, Im banning falsetto.”
