Citi Bike Adds Surge Pedaling Fees

Rates rise with your sweat

As if biking in New York wasn’t already dangerous, Citi Bike has announced “surge pedaling fees,” according to reports. Riders will now be charged extra depending on how fast they pedal, how steep the hill is, and how sweaty they get while doing it.

“It’s dynamic pricing for dynamic thighs,” explained a company spokesperson, pointing to new sensors installed on handlebars that detect perspiration and grunt volume. A slow cruise through Central Park costs $4, but a desperate pedal up the Williamsburg Bridge could hit $27.50, not including helmet tax.

Locals are furious. “I biked to work and got charged $65 because I was late and pedaled too hard,” complained one Midtown accountant. Tourists, however, are thrilled, calling it “a real New York experience” right before collapsing in bike lanes.

Tabloids spun their wheels. “FEE-WHEELIN’” screamed the Post. The Daily News countered: “PEDAL PAY.” TikTok’s #SurgePedal trend featured influencers screaming as their Citi Bike apps overdrafted mid-ride.

Mayor Adams defended the policy, claiming it encourages “fitness accountability.” Governor Hochul promised to study alternative models, like “cry-based billing” for L train delays.

For now, Citi Bike remains both transportation and a financial trap—proof that in this city, even your sweat isn’t free.
