When Your Childhood Issues Become Brand Identity

Trauma As Personality Trait

In Brooklyn coffee shops, a troubling trend has emerged where people craft entire identities around childhood dysfunction. These trauma-preneurs introduce themselves at parties with, “Hi, I’m Rachel, my father never hugged me,” as if unresolved abandonment issues constitute a personality rather than therapy homework.

The childhood trauma branding phenomenon has become so pervasive that dating app bios now read like therapy intake forms. “Avoidant attachment style seeking anxious partner for mutually destructive relationship” isn’t a red flag anymore—it’s a mission statement. Mental health awareness has morphed from destigmatization into competitive victimhood Olympics.

These individuals have monetized their dysfunction, launching Instagram accounts documenting their “healing journey” complete with sponsored posts from essential oil companies. They attend workshops titled “Daddy Issues & Dollars: Turning Pain Into Profit” and write Medium posts beginning with, “As someone with complex PTSD from my mother serving dinner at 6:15 instead of 6:00…”

Normal people experience difficult childhoods and work through issues privately. But brand-identity trauma survivors require constant public validation, posting daily updates about their inner child’s needs. Their inner child, frankly, probably needs them to shut up and see an actual licensed professional instead of treating Instagram followers as group therapy.

Therapists warn that making trauma your personality prevents actual healing. When your entire social media presence revolves around being damaged, recovery threatens your brand. Better to stay broken and interesting than become healthy and boring, right?
