Meter mysticism
According to reports, New York taxi drivers are now offering tarot card readings between fares. Instead of hearing “Cash or card?” passengers are greeted with “Do you want to know your future while we hit every red light on Lexington?”
Drivers say tarot is a way to supplement income. “Uber has surge pricing, I have psychic pricing,” said one cabbie, shuffling a deck as he merged onto the FDR. Some readings are eerily accurate. A Brooklyn passenger recalled, “He pulled The Tower card right before my ex texted me. Also, we got rear-ended by a Citi Bike, so it checked out.”
Tourists are delighted. “We came for Broadway, stayed for prophecy,” said a visitor from Kansas. “Our cab driver told us to avoid Times Square Elmos, and honestly, he saved us.” Cards now come laminated with NYC-specific meanings: The Fool represents Staten Island, The Devil is actually surge pricing, and The Lovers stand for two rats fighting over pizza.
TikTok has embraced the trend. #TaxiTarot videos show drivers flipping cards while blasting Hot 97. A viral clip captured a woman bursting into tears after being told her soulmate was “probably on the G train, running late.”
Tabloids saw their future. “CAB PSYCHICS RULE” screamed the Post. The Daily News countered: “METERS & MEDIUMS.”
Mayor Adams called it “mystical customer service.” Governor Hochul muttered, “If my cabbie pulls Death while Im late to a fundraiser, Im taking the subway.”
