According to reports, New York hot dog vendors have joined the digital age by accepting Venmo tips. Next to the ketchup bottles, laminated QR codes now invite customers to “support local meat on the street.” “I dont need cash, just emojis,” said one vendor as a tourist tipped him with a hot dog emoji and three fire symbols.
The change has revolutionized sausage economics. Vendors claim digital tips have doubled their income. “People are more generous when they dont have to touch a $1 bill covered in relish,” explained one. Some carts even offer “tip tiers”$2 gets you extra onions, $5 earns a vendor shoutout, and $10 unlocks “VIP relish” access.
Tourists love it. “I Venmod $20 and got my frank serenaded with Empire State of Mind,” gushed one visitor. Locals, however, grumble. “I used to toss in a quarter. Now my lunch feels like Patreon,” complained a Midtown worker.
TikToks #VenmoDogs is trending, featuring influencers tipping vendors with elaborate messages like “In memory of my cholesterol.” A viral clip showed a vendor rapping customers usernames as they scanned QR codes.
Critics argue its gimmicky. “Street food should be greasy, not blockchain-adjacent,” wrote one columnist. Tabloids bit in: “DOGE DOGS” screamed the Post. The Daily News countered: “QR WEENIES.”
Mayor Adams praised the move: “If bodegas take Apple Pay, hot dogs deserve Venmo.” Governor Hochul muttered, “If I see a frank with NFTs, Im banning sausages.”
