NYC Bagel Shops Set Minimum Cream Cheese Law

Schmear must be at least half an inch

Forget rent reform. According to reports, New York lawmakers are considering legislation requiring a minimum half-inch of cream cheese on every bagel sold in the five boroughs. The proposal, known as the Schmear Equity Act, has bipartisan support—and fierce opposition from stingy delis.

The bill was introduced after years of customer complaints about paper-thin cream cheese layers. “We’ve been robbed,” one Brooklynite said. “If I can see bagel through the schmear, it’s a hate crime.”

Bagel shop owners are divided. Some support the law, saying it preserves New York’s culinary integrity. Others argue it will bankrupt them. “Do you know how much cream cheese costs in bulk?” one Bronx baker shouted. “I’ll have to mortgage my sesame seeds.”

Tabloids devoured the story. “BATTLE OF THE SCHMEAR” roared the Post. The Daily News countered: “LOX AND LAWMAKERS.” Twitter exploded with polls: “How thick is too thick?” Memes showed bagels buried under mountains of schmear, captioned “NYC 2025.”

Mayor Adams expressed cautious support, noting, “I like my bagel with dignity.” Governor Hochul said she’d sign the law—if it included vegan options. Meanwhile, cream cheese manufacturers are reportedly giddy, preparing for record sales. One insider whispered, “This is better than the cupcake boom.”

Tourists are confused but intrigued. “I just wanted a bagel,” said a visitor from Iowa. “Now I feel like I’m part of history.” Locals, however, see justice at last. As one Queens resident declared: “No more dry bites. This is the New York we deserve.”
