Central Park Squirrels Unionize, Demand Nut Parity With Riverside Park Squirrels

Local 1 of the Greater New York Sciurid Workers Federation files first grievance

The Acorn Gap Is Real

NEW YORK — Squirrels in Central Park formally announced the establishment of Local 1 of the Greater New York Sciurid Workers Federation this week, citing “persistent nut inequality, inadequate bench proximity, and the ongoing threat of joggers” as the conditions that drove them to organize.

The federation’s first grievance, filed with the Parks Department via a series of emphatic gestures, demands nut parity with Riverside Park squirrels, whom Central Park members describe as “living lavishly on a less trafficked route.”

The Conditions That Sparked Organizing

Squirrel labor observer Dr. Fenwick Bushy of the Wildlife Sociology Institute noted that Central Park squirrels handle an estimated 42 million tourist interactions per year, many involving being photographed eating, approached by children, and startled by cyclists. “They are essentially unpaid performers in an outdoor entertainment venue,” Bushy said. “Riverside squirrels see maybe four joggers and a dog walker. It is a different existence.”

Union spokesperson (an Eastern gray squirrel on the 72nd Street transverse, identified as Representative Chestnut) communicated demands through what Bushy described as “aggressive tail-flagging and a very pointed stare.” A translator confirmed the core ask: more hazelnuts, fewer selfie sticks, and a formal recognition that tourists feeding them bread is not a meal plan.

City Response

The Parks Department said it “respects the squirrels’ right to organize” and is reviewing the grievance. A spokesperson noted the Department does not technically negotiate with wildlife but added it has “always valued the squirrels’ contribution to the park experience.” The NYC Parks Department confirmed no acorn distribution policy currently exists. The squirrels appear to have known this already.
