Exhausted Students Finally Get Institutional Acknowledgment of Absurd Schedule
In a move that somehow manages to be both progressive and completely missing the point, Manhattan’s prestigious Eastside Academy has installed “wellness nap pods” for students, essentially admitting that their 7:30 AM start time is destroying teenagers’ health while doing absolutely nothing to fix the actual problem.
The sleek, expensive podswhich cost $15,000 eachallow students to take 20-minute power naps between classes, because apparently the solution to sleep-deprived teenagers is giving them futuristic furniture rather than letting them start school at a reasonable hour. “We’re really proud of this wellness initiative,” Principal Margaret Anderson announced, standing next to technology that wouldn’t be necessary if school started after sunrise.
Students are thrilled with the pods but somewhat confused by the logic. “So they know we’re exhausted, they know science says teenagers need more sleep, and their solution is… nap furniture?” questioned junior Marcus Chen, 16. “Why not just start school at 9 AM like literally every study recommends?” This reasonable question was apparently never asked during the $120,000 nap pod installation process.
The nap pods themselves are admittedly impressiveergonomic design, gentle lighting, even soothing nature soundsbut they’re essentially a Band-Aid on a problem that the school created and continues to maintain. It’s like setting someone’s house on fire and then generously providing them with a really nice fire extinguisher.
New York parents are divided. Some applaud the school’s attention to student wellness, while others wonder if that attention could extend to, say, letting kids sleep until a reasonable hour. “My daughter’s bus comes at 6:45 AM,” said one mother. “She’s 15, not a dairy farmer. The nap pods are great, but maybe don’t make her wake up before the sun?”
The school administration insists the early start time is necessary for “scheduling efficiency,” though they declined to explain why efficiency matters more than student health, mental wellness, and academic performanceall of which improve with adequate sleep.
Several students have reportedly started sleeping in the pods for entire class periods, which is definitely not what the school intended but is absolutely what they should have expected.
