Staten Island Secedes Again

Claims cultural independence

In a move shocking no one, Staten Island has announced—again—that it’s seceding from New York City. According to reports, borough leaders declared cultural independence, citing “too many oat milk lattes” in Manhattan and “insufficient parking.”

The declaration ceremony was held in a strip mall parking lot, where a Staten Island flag (a White Castle wrapper duct-taped to a Mets jersey) was raised to raucous applause. Residents chanted: “No tolls, no rules!”

Officials announced Staten Island’s new government structure: the Borough President is now Supreme Leader, pizza shops double as embassies, and all civic disputes will be settled at the Staten Island Mall food court.

Tabloids chuckled. “BOROUGH BREAKUP” headlined the Post. The Daily News countered: “FREE AT LAST?” Social feeds lit up with memes of Staten Islanders riding jet skis across the Hudson waving independence flags. TikTok users launched #StatenExit, where creators dramatically film themselves crossing the Verrazzano while blasting Bon Jovi.

Mayor Adams brushed it off, saying, “They’ll be back in a week.” Governor Hochul warned that secession would mean Staten Island residents lose EZ-Pass discounts. Staten Islanders countered by threatening to annex parts of New Jersey. “Jersey doesn’t even want us,” admitted one resident.

For now, Staten Island’s fate hangs in limbo. As one local proudly declared: “We’re not New Yorkers. We’re Staten Yorkers.”
