Declares itself “Peoples Republic of Pizza”
The borough of Queens has had enough. According to reports, leaders declared independence from New York City this week, rebranding as the “Peoples Republic of Pizza.” The announcement came during a ceremony outside a Corona pizzeria, where officials hoisted a flag featuring a pepperoni slice on a sesame bagel background.
The new republic claims sovereignty based on its unmatched food diversity. “We have Thai in Elmhurst, tacos in Jackson Heights, dumplings in Flushing, and pizza literally everywhere,” said interim President Tony from Astoria. “Why share with Manhattan when we can be our own carb superpower?”
The constitution of Queens guarantees free garlic knots for all, discounted Mets tickets, and unlimited use of the 7 train (when it actually works). Citizenship is granted automatically to anyone who can pronounce “Gyro” five different ways without hesitation. National cuisine isof coursepizza, but residents can major in ramen, falafel, or empanadas as electives.
New Yorkers are divided. Brooklyn mocked the move, saying Queens lacks “brand recognition.” Manhattan scoffed, pointing out Queens airports. “Enjoy customs at LaGuardia,” one Wall Street banker sneered. Staten Island asked quietly if they could join.
Tabloids jumped on the story: “SLICE OF INDEPENDENCE” screamed the Post. The Daily News went with “FREE-DUMPLINGS.” Social media went wild with #PizzaRepublic memes, including one showing Queens new passportessentially a laminated MetroCard with marinara stains.
Mayor Adams called the secession illegal, but Queens residents shrugged. “Weve been ignored for decades,” one Jackson Heights resident said. “This is payback for all those jokes about being the other borough.” Rumors suggest Queens may apply for UN recognition, though officials admit it might just be to get free catering at events.
As one jubilant Astoria resident shouted during the independence rally: “Finally, Queens is free! Free to mispronounce street names and eat pizza at 3 a.m. without judgment!”
