When Professional Networking Becomes Romantic Prospecting
LinkedIn, designed for professional networking, has become a dating app for people who think “synergy” sounds sexy. These corporate Casanovas slide into inboxes with opening lines like “I noticed we both have experience in supply chain management” before pivoting to dinner invitations. They’ve turned career advancement into courtship, and it’s exactly as uncomfortable as it sounds.
The LinkedIn flirting epidemic thrives in the ambiguous space between networking and harassment. Recipients can’t tell if “I’d love to pick your brain over coffee” means professional mentorship or a date disguised as networking. This confusion is the pointif rejected, the flirter claims innocent professional interest, maintaining plausible deniability.
These digital Don Juans craft messages referencing shared connections, mutual interests, and career achievements before smoothly transitioning to personal topics. “Your presentation on quarterly earnings was impressive. Speaking of impressive, are you single?” The audacity would be admirable if it weren’t so creepy.
Women especially report exhaustion from LinkedIn advances, unable to maintain professional presence without fielding romantic overtures from colleagues, clients, and random men who attended the same webinar. They joined LinkedIn for career opportunities, not to explain that “wanting to connect professionally” doesn’t mean matrimonially.
LinkedIn’s official position is that the platform is for professional use only. Their actual position, revealed through inaction, is that they’ll tolerate anything that keeps users engaged. The company benefits from increased activity, even when that activity consists of making professional networking insufferable for half the user base.
