Farewell fare
According to reports, New York City has opened a museum dedicated entirely to lost MetroCards. Located in a defunct token booth at 42nd Street, the museum displays over 3 million yellow-and-blue relics, each with precisely $2.75 left on them. Curators call it “a shrine to wasted potential.”
Exhibits include “The Infinite Swipe” wall, where visitors can attempt to swipe expired cards and relive the pain of “Please Swipe Again.” One wing features MetroCards found in laundromats, snowbanks, and mysteriously inside bagels. Another is devoted entirely to those crumpled in back pockets, forever unreadable by the turnstile gods.
Tourists are confused. “We thought we were going to MoMA,” said a visitor from Ohio. “Instead, we cried over a card that expired in 2009.” Locals, however, feel vindicated. “This is our history,” said a Queens resident. “I lost my first paycheck to a stack of unreadable swipes.”
TikToks #MetroCardMuseum trend shows influencers dramatically swiping ghost cards while playing sad violin music. A viral video featured a man proposing to his girlfriend with a MetroCard that still had $0.75 on itshe said yes, then asked for exact change.
Tabloids tapped in. “LOST & SWIPED” screamed the Post. The Daily News countered: “CARDI B TRAIN.”
Mayor Adams praised it as “an emotional fare recovery program.” Governor Hochul muttered, “Wake me up when they add Apple Pay.”
