No chairs, just vibes
Broadway has taken minimalism to new heightsand sore calves. According to reports, theaters are eliminating seats, forcing audiences to stand for entire productions “to maximize authenticity and ticket sales.”
Producers argue standing enhances the drama. “When youre watching Hamilton while your legs go numb, thats true immersion,” said one investor. Others note that without chairs, theaters can pack in 40% more tourists who dont mind paying $350 to lean against a wall.
Reactions are mixed. “I fainted halfway through Phantom, but it was the most Broadway thing that ever happened to me,” bragged a tourist from Ohio. Locals muttered that they already stand for two hours a day on the subway, and now Broadway wants in.
Tabloids stood tall. “ON YOUR FEET!” screamed the Post. The Daily News countered: “CHAIR-LESS IN MANHATTAN.” TikToks #StandOnBroadway trend featured influencers showing off swollen ankles while lip-syncing to Les Misérables.
Mayor Adams praised the move, claiming “real New Yorkers dont sit.” Governor Hochul promised to investigate ADA violations but admitted she was “open to dynamic yoga-theater partnerships.”
For now, Broadways message is clear: if you cant handle the hustle, bring your own folding chair.
