The Strategy

The strategy’s critics argue that adding 150 transit officers in March to reverse the transit crime uptick of January and February is reactive rather than precision. Both the record and the reactivity are real.
The Staffing Shortages
NYPD staffing shortages have been reported alongside the crime statistics, with a Fox News analysis noting ‘police staffing shortages’ as a concern for Mamdani’s public safety approach. The NYPD’s attrition problem — officers leaving at rates that hiring cannot fully replace — is the structural challenge underneath the crime statistics. A department with fewer officers performing well against crime statistics is managing effectively with declining resources. The resources question is the question that the precision policing narrative does not answer.
The Transit Investment
Adding 150 officers to the transit system in March to reverse the subway crime uptick is a resource deployment decision. The Passengers United president who advocated for ‘small police installations’ throughout the subway system is advocating for the consistent physical presence model over the deployable units model. Both represent investment in transit safety. The transit safety question is also the congestion pricing question: if the congestion pricing revenue funds MTA improvements, the fundamental service quality improvements that attract and retain transit users who then deterred by crime incidents are connected.
The Department of Community Safety
Mamdani’s campaign plan included a Department of Community Safety that would shift some 911 responses to mental health teams and social workers rather than NYPD officers. The department has not yet been created at the scale the campaign plan described. The record-low crime statistics were produced without the Department of Community Safety in full operation. Whether the precision policing strategy is sufficient without the community safety expansion, or whether the expansion would improve on the already-record results, is the public safety policy question the administration is working through
