People Who Believe Their Kombucha Is Haunted

When Fermentation Meets Delusion

The wellness community has reached new heights of absurdity: people claiming their kombucha is haunted. These fermented beverage spiritualists insist their drinks contain supernatural entities alongside probiotics, believing the bubbling sounds and shifting SCOBY indicate ghostly presence rather than, you know, basic chemistry. Brooklyn alone hosts dozens convinced their kitchen harbors paranormal activity.

The haunted kombucha phenomenon combines scientific illiteracy with desperate need for mysticism in mundane life. These believers point to jar movement (carbonation), temperature changes (fermentation), and “voices” (their own inner monologue) as evidence of spirits. Scientists point to these same observations as evidence of having failed middle school biology.

One Manhattan woman insists her kombucha contains her grandmother’s spirit, claiming the SCOBY “speaks” to her during full moons. The SCOBY, a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast, possesses no consciousness, let alone ability to channel deceased relatives. But telling her this triggers defensive responses about “not understanding energy work.”

These paranormal brewers create elaborate rituals around their ferments, lighting candles and playing music to “keep the spirits happy.” They’ve taken a simple fermentation process requiring sugar, tea, and time, and added unnecessary mysticism because apparently making probiotics isn’t interesting enough without supernatural elements.

The trend reveals society’s hunger for meaning in a secular age. Unable to find spirituality through traditional means, people project consciousness onto fermented tea. It’s simultaneously sad and hilarious—sad that people are this desperate for connection, hilarious that they chose kombucha as their spiritual medium. Of all possible haunted objects, they picked vinegar juice.
