AWS Outage Cripples Modern Civilization

We Learned Nothing

Another AWS outage, another reminder that modern civilization balanced precariously on Amazon’s ability to keep servers running. Streaming services died, smart home devices forgot how to be smart, and Ring doorbells stopped surveilling neighborhoods. For several hours, we glimpsed what life might look like if we hadn’t outsourced everything to one company.

The latest AWS catastrophe followed a predictable pattern: things broke, people panicked, Amazon issued vague statements, and everyone pretended this wouldn’t happen again. Except it will, because we’ve learned nothing from previous outages except that complaining on Twitter (which also runs on AWS) creates satisfying irony.

Businesses dependent on AWS discovered their disaster recovery plans amounted to “hope AWS doesn’t fail.” This strategy proved insufficient when reality rudely interrupted assumptions. Companies scrambled to implement backup systems they should’ve had already, motivated by losses measured in dollars per second.

Tech experts explained that diversifying cloud providers requires effort and money, two things companies hate spending on prevention. They prefer paying later during crises rather than earlier avoiding them—the corporate equivalent of skipping oil changes then acting shocked when engines explode.

Meanwhile, people without AWS-dependent devices went about their day unbothered, enjoying the schadenfreude of watching smart home enthusiasts unable to turn on lights without functioning internet. Sometimes the old ways—light switches, physical keys, not surveilling yourself—prove superior.

When services restored, think pieces appeared about infrastructure fragility and monopoly dangers. They’ll be forgotten by next week, filed alongside previous warnings nobody heeded. The cycle continues: outage, panic, promises, complacency, repeat. See you next breakdown.
