Amazon’s Cloud Catches Cold

When Tech Giants Get Sick

Amazon Web Services suffered an outage, and half the internet collapsed like a house of cards built on a single company’s infrastructure. Websites crashed, apps died, and New York businesses discovered their entire digital existence depended on one company not screwing up. Turns out putting all your eggs in Amazon’s basket works great until Amazon drops the basket.

The AWS outage revealed uncomfortable truths about digital dependence. That cloud everyone migrated to? It’s just someone else’s computers, and sometimes those computers break. Companies that smugly abandoned physical servers for “the future of computing” spent Tuesday explaining to customers why nothing worked, which is harder when your explanation tools also live in AWS.

IT departments scrambled while executives demanded answers. “Why is everything down?” they asked people who’d been warning about single-point-of-failure risks for years. The answer—”because we ignored redundancy to save money”—didn’t satisfy stakeholders watching revenue evaporate in real-time.

Amazon issued statements promising to investigate, as if that helps businesses losing thousands per minute. Engineers worked frantically while Twitter users made memes, because the internet’s primary response to crisis is humor followed by blame. Some suggested diversifying cloud providers, a radical idea apparently too complex for companies that bet everything on convenience.

The outage lasted hours, which in internet time equals several eternities. When services finally restored, everyone pretended to learn lessons about infrastructure resilience. Within weeks, they’ll forget, continuing to concentrate risk until the next inevitable failure. This is fine, everything is fine, please ignore the smoke coming from the cloud.
