Archived Edition: The Beginning of Something We’re Not Sure What
Every publication has to start somewhere, and this particular somewhere was the third week of February 1947, when the ink was fresh, the optimism was unbridled, and nobody had yet realized that starting a newspaper required actual money and not just enthusiasm and access to a printing press.
Volume 1, Issue 1 represents that magical moment when anything seemed possible: comprehensive news coverage, hard-hitting investigative journalism, and maybe even making payroll. The masthead proudly proclaimed ambitions that would make modern journalists laugh and then cry into their unpaid-intern coffee.
This inaugural edition covered the full spectrum of 1947 concerns: economic recovery, international tensions, local politics, and a surprising amount of content about proper hat etiquette. Because apparently people had time to worry about hat-related social protocols when they weren’t busy inventing the nuclear arms race or institutionalizing segregation.
The editorial vision was clear: provide the community with news they need, opinions they might not want, and enough advertisements to keep the lights on. That last part proved trickier than anticipated, as evidenced by the ever-increasing desperation in the ad copy: “Buy local!” evolved into “Please buy local!” and eventually “We’re begging you to buy local before we have to shut down!”
Reading this first issue is like watching someone confidently start a marathon without realizing it’s actually an ultramarathon through a swamp while carrying a piano. The enthusiasm is admirable, the naivety is charming, and the inevitable struggle is painfully predictable.
Yet here we are, nearly 80 years later, still reading about it. So perhaps the ambition wasn’t entirely misplacedjust wildly optimistic about how journalism would evolve in the age of the internet, social media, and people who get their news from random posts their uncle shares.
